Last January, two students of SMAN 4 Denpasar (Revaldi Nathanael Wirabuana & Revian Nathanael WIrabuana from XII IPA 4) along with two other students from Bogor and Yogyakarta joined the 2012 World Schools Debating Championship in Cape Town South Africa. These students are selected from numerous trials and competitions conducted from city to national levels.
The National Selection Camp was conducted at November 2011, where 24 debaters from all over Indonesia gathered to compete. Students from Aceh, Medan, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, Banten, DKI Jakarta, Kalimantan, and Maluku joined the camp. In the end, 4 students were chosen as a member of the 2012 “Team Indonesia”, namely:
1. Revian Nathanael Wirabuana (Bali)
2. Revaldi Nathanael WIrabuana (Bali)
3. Cheryl Nazik Cosslett (West Java)
4. Alif Satria (DI Yogyakarta)
Revaldi and Revian, as well as the other team member have to undergo a 2 month training session conducted at Universitas Indonesia from Late November to mid-January. They are trained by their coach, Subarkah Syafruddin and Ruli Manurung from Universitas Indonesia. They have to complete several assignments, such as research, sparring session, and meetings with resources. As a warm up, Team Indonesia also compete in the 2011 Founder’s Trophy, University-level debate competition at November 2011. In that competition, Revaldi is awarded the “Best Novice Team”, while Revian is awarded the “Best Novice Speaker”.

After they completed the training session, Team Indonesia heads to Cape Town at January 17th. It was a tiring 19-hours flight, but our students managed to pull through. Indonesia debated on 8 rounds, facing 8 different countries and debating on 8 different topics, namely:
1. Indonesia vs Singapore, “That we should ban alcohol”
2. Zimbabwe vs Indonesia, “That Religious Parties Should Not Be Allowed to Join General Election”

In the end, Indonesia won 4 out of 8 debates. Our team won against Zimbabwe, Mongolia, Germany, and Botswana. Indonesia was placed at #25 among #48 participating country. In the “English as Foreign Language” Category (EFL), Indonesia won 3rd Place, losing to Lithuania and Netherlands. Individually, Revian and Revaldi are awarded as the 11th and 15th EFL Best Speaker, an excellent achievement for Indonesia.

All in all, these students have successfully made us proud. Thank you for Revaldi and Revian, teachers of SMAN4 Denpasar that have supported them, and Foursma English Club for restlessly scouting for new talents every year. SMAN 4 Denpasar will never cease to showcase our young generation’s talent in the International stage, while preserving our culture as our identity.
